What's the difference between a train and a car?
One is a train.
What do you call a bear with no socks on?
A bear.
What do you call a bear with socks on?
A desperate joke.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
The police. You're under arrest for robbery.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Doorbell replacement service.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
The door.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Hello? Ugh, stupid pranksters.
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Your wife.
I'm not home!

I had a dream that I was living in an old attic once. It was weird...I was in the attic of my old house, clearing out boxes. For some reason, the attic had three floors and there was an elevator. I heard someone call for me from the top floor and headed up there. Dancing socks kept following me, climbing onto my feet and forcing me to go places. For some reason, the top two floors weren't fully floored. There were two narrow strips of wood you could walk on, but if you looked around below you, the boxes on the first level was visible. When I got to the top, there was an army of soldiers, toy soldiers, waiting for me. The dancing socks were climbing onto my feet again and I was forced to go to the army. There was a book in one of the soldier's hands and he began chanting a passage from it over and over. A bird started chirping. The room got hot. The socks began laughing. Then everything stopped and I was on the first floor again, holding a sock. For some reason, I think I died in that dream.

Once upon a time there lived a man by the name of Rafeal. He went to go buy a hat. He was trying on different hats when he came upon one that caught his eye. He went to buy it and when he got home and put it on, he passed out. When he woke up, with a slight headache, he found that he was in a different world. He was surrounded by trees. There was a bumpy, dark road that seemed to go on forever. As he walked down the road, something glared in the distance. He ran to it. He picked it up; it was a key. He looked into the distance; he saw a lake. He walked slowly and cautiously, right before he reached the lake, he felt something in his pocket. It was a coin.
(Teacher's note: I chose this free-write because it seemed like a great opening to an even bigger story.)

Death is in the Air
The cold and darkness falls down from the sky
We wish all the plants a faithful goodbye
The air is eerie
and haunting, sneering
As the creeping hollows crumble to mush
The summer silently comes to a hush.
(Teacher's note: I chose this poem because it was original and something I haven't seen from my students before. I loved the haunting language.)
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Writers, you should be deciding what you would like to write your review on by next class on Wednesday, November 6. We will begin writing our rough drafts on Wednesday!

...I rammed the ship into the merchant ship head on. The weakened sails of their ship crumbled down like blocks, and the ship itself got its front nose torn off. My own crew flew back from the impact but I was merely dazed.
"Come on lads!" I shouted. "Board!!!"
My crew threw their hooks to grapple onto the ship and started the board. I let go of the wheel and readied my weapons. My swords were drawn into battle positions, ready to enter this battle with me. I sprinted part to merchant ship and leapt onto an inactive canon. I threw my swords up onto the deck and began to climb. Musket fire was the only thing I could hear as I rose to the deck. I reached the rail and vaulted. I lifted my swords to my side and entered the battle with the thirty other merchants that were left and armed.
"Ethan!" yelled Cane. "Get the captain!"
I sprinted to the wheel in hope of finding him or at the least a clue where to find him. Instead, I found nothing, absolutely nothing. The captain didn't leave a trace. I began to observe every area near the wheel, but nothing. I thought it was hopeless until I heard the canons fire. Instantly, I knew exactly where the captain was.
(Teacher's note: I chose this free-write because it was filled with imagery. And that cliffhanger at the end really left me wondering what was going to happen next!)
